Julio Betancourt is a member of ISPE's executive committee and also holds an adjunct appointment through the Desert Laboratory, an institution with a 90-year tradition in the study of ecological, hydrological, and geological phenomena in arid regions. His research generally focuses on how climate variability affects vegetation and surface hydrology on time scales from years to millennia, with much of his work focusing on the southwestern United States. He has worked on a wide range of topics, from late nineteeth century arroyo cutting and twentieth century flood frequency to physiological and possibly microevolutionary responses to atmospheric CO2 and climatic variations during the last deglaciation.
