Yolande Serra specializes in tropical ocean-atmosphere interactions and atmospheric dynamics on daily to multi-year time scales. She is currently researching tropical east Pacific synoptic waves and their relationship to the underlying ocean and larger scale atmospheric circulations. Synoptic waves are the dominant scale of variability in low-level winds, precipitation, and clouds throughout the tropical east Pacific region, and are the primary source of east Pacific hurricanes. Serra relies on in situ and satellite data, as well as general circulation and regional model analyses for her research.
