Allan Matthias' research centers on improved understanding of climatic and soil factors affecting agricultural use of water for producing crops in arid and semiarid regions. He studies air-surface exchanges involving radiation, heat, momentum, water vapor, carbon dioxide and nitrogen oxides within these regions and is investigating how "free-air CO2 enrichment" (FACE) of irrigated wheat may effect the ability of soils to release N2O to the atmosphere.
